Spearheaded by La Via Campesina (LVC), the adoption of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Peasants and People Working in Rural Area (UNDROP) adopted in December 2018 by the UN General Assembly marked a milestone in an advocacy process towards the recognition of peasants’ rights that started almost two decades ago. The right to land, to seed, to food, water for agriculture among other human rights and the corresponding states’ obligations are clearly detailed in the UNDROP.
Now, two years after the adoption, the peasants rights in the UNDROP must be translated into realities in order to for the rights to be respected, realised, and upheld. This means, for example, that democratisation of the UNDROP must make way and the UNDROP must be made known not only to UNDROP rights-holders but as well as to duty-bearers; national laws and policy must be brought in line with UNDROP; and the UNDROP must be proactively used by social movements and CSOs as a tool for mobilisation across regions and communication.
The UNDROP, adopted in December 2018 by the UN General Assembly, marked a milestone towards the recognition of peasants’ rights, clearly detailing states’ obligations. These rights must be respected, realised, and upheld. This workshop brings participants from Asia and Europe to build a common platform for the use of the UNDROP by peoples’ movements.
